BACKGROUND The family of CD1 molecules consists of group 1 CD1 proteins (CD1a, CD1b, CD1c and CD1e) and group 2 CD1 proteins (CD1d). CD1a is a lipid-presenting molecule. CD1a is a transmembraneglycoproteins, which is structurally related to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins and form heterodimers with beta-2-microglobulin. CD1a proteins are expressed in the skin at high density on the surface of Langerhans cells. Previous studies have shown the unique capacity of CD1a to exchange associated b2m with that present in the serum.
