BACKGROUND Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor(G-CSF) is a growth factor and an essential cytokine belonging to the CSF family of hormone-like glycoproteins. G-CSF is a glycoprotein, secreted by the cells of the immune system, fibroblasts, and endothelium and functions to stimulate granulopoiesis, the innate immunity, and the differentiation of neural progenitor cells. It is produced mainly by monocytes and macrophages upon activation by endotoxin, TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma. Various carcinoma cell lines and myeloblastic leukemia cells can express G-CSF constitutively. G-CSF conveys neuroprotection to central neurons upon increases in phosphorylation of PI3K/Akt pathway, and regulates epithelial to mesenchymal transition in cancer. G-CSF acts via a specific cognate receptor(G-CSFR) that belongs to the class I cytokine receptor superfamily. G-CSF is well known as a hematopoietic cytokine that stimulates the proliferation, differentiation, and function of myeloid progenitors and mobilization of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. G-CSF has the potential to inhibit the progression of atherosclerosis in animal models. G-CSF receptorwas expressed on cardiomyocytes and G-CSF activated the Jak/Stat pathway in cardiomyocytes.
