BACKGROUND Granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a cytokine with immunomodulation effects. Named for its relatively specific stimulation of the growth of neutrophil progenitor cells in vitro in semi-solid cultures G-CSF is a growth factor and an essential cytokine belonging to the CSF family of hormone-like glycoproteins. G-CSF is a major extracellular regulator of haemopoiesis and the innate immune system. G-CSF influences the survival, proliferation and differentiation of all cells in the neutrophil lineage, from haemopoietic stem cell through to mature neutrophil. G-CSF, granulocyte-macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and pegylated G-CSF are effective at reducing risk and duration of neutropenia-related events. The expression level of GCSF is significantly associated with the prognostic survival of Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and it is expected to become a new prognostic marker of HCC, providing a novel idea for future basic research as well as targeted therapy.
