BACKGROUND | ||
Colony-stimulating factor 2 (CSF-2) is a hematopoietic growth factor involved in the differentiation of various myeloid cells from hematopoietic progenitor cells. GM-CSF has been shown to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of the experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model for multiple sclerosis. GM-CSF is a major cytokine produced by the encephalitogenic IL-17-producing T helper cells (Th17 cells) and required for Th17 cell-mediated EAE pathogenesis. GM-CSF stimulates the differentiation of hematopoietic progenitors to monocytes and neutrophils, and reduces the risk for febrile neutropenia in cancer patients. GM-CSF has been utilized in the clinical management of multiple disease processes. Most recently, GM-CSF has been incorporated into the treatment of malignancies as a sole therapy, as well as a vaccine adjuvant. | ||
